Protecting Your Ideas: An Introduction to Patents and Intellectual Property

Great ideas are at the heart of every thriving business. Whether you’ve created a new product, developed an innovative process, built a brand, or launched a creative business, understanding how to protect your intellectual property can be an important part of turning an idea into a successful venture.

SCORE will present Introduction to Patents and Intellectual Property on September 24 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at Fairfield Library. This free, in-person workshop is designed for inventors, entrepreneurs, and anyone interested in learning more about intellectual property and patents.

No prior knowledge of the patent system is required.

What will you learn?

Attendees will explore:

  • The value of copyrights and trademarks

  • Different types of patents

  • How patents can protect intellectual property and the rights they provide

  • What to expect during the patent application process

  • How long obtaining a patent may take

  • The potential costs involved in obtaining a patent

  • Why international patents can matter

  • Free online search tools for determining whether an invention has already been patented

  • How artificial intelligence may affect intellectual property from a business perspective

For Fairfield-area entrepreneurs and innovators, the workshop offers an opportunity to gain a better understanding of an often-overlooked aspect of building and growing a business: protecting the ideas and intellectual property behind it.
